Can i skate ski on an ungroomed surface, like a golf course?

I want to start skate skiing but i would just have access to an unmaintained golf course, so i was wondering if i could make my own trails? also would it be any harder to make trails cross country skiing? i am wondering which i should choose to pursue. thanks!
